Hoyt & Hoyt is, first and foremost, a plaintiff's personal injury firm.
"Personal injury" as a general term refers to instances when a person suffers some type of physical injury to their body as a result of the negligent act of someone else. In order to "have a case" for personal injury, there must be a quantifiable injury and a responsible party other than the injured person. Typical personal injury cases include auto accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and product liability.
Workers' compensation claims are related to the practice of personal injury in that both usually involve injuries to the body. However, when a person is injured in the course of his employment, his employer is automatically the responsible party. There is no need to prove any negligent act. The employer is responsible to pay certain benefits to the inured employer. It sounds simple, but frequently a competent lawyer is needed to represent the injured employee's interest against insurance company lawyers in the workers' compensation court system. Hoyt & Hoyt has extensive experience handling these types of cases. Our attorneys have handled both plaintiffs and defense clients in personal injury matters for a combined 23 years. John S. Hoyt, III is former house counsel to several large insurance companies, and has represented clients in dozens of jury trials. Robert F. Hoyt is a former associate attorney with a large Connecticut Law Firm, and has handled litigation for large corporations, wealthy businessmen, and hundreds of injured clients.
Hoyt & Hoyt currently focuses its practice on plaintiffs and petitioners work in personal injury and workers compensation matters. This allows us to be far more knowledgeable in the practical aspects of these cases, and in the law itself, than your typical general practice lawyers. Furthermore, we remain a small firm intentionally (2 lawyers plus a highly skilled support staff). Each case we take on is handled from start to finish by one attorney, who is able to become thoroughly familiar with the case and the client. This provides us an advantage over larger firms, where clients are handled by teams of lawyers and associates who may only be involved in one aspect of the case.
